The New DOT App - Stay Connected Underground

A visual beauty, DOT’s app provides passengers with multiple ticket options, facial recognition and solves a travel problem known since the dawn of digital.

The challenge

In September 2019 the first of three planned metro lines in Copenhagen will be available to the public. With 17 new underground stations, it is expected that more than 191.2 million passengers will use the Metro every year in 2035. The expansion raised a new set of challenges for DOT.

We partnered with DOT to design and develop a new and improved app for all types of passengers in and around the area. The overall goal was to improve user satisfaction by developing a comprehensive all-in-one app for iOS and Android.

Through complicated technologies and an agile development process, the resulting app makes it possible for passengers to view all available ticket options, purchase tickets with facial recognition and fingerprints, and it provides a unique map visualisation to make it a lot easier to buy the correct tickets. It even works without any data connection.

The outcome

30

seconds or less ticket purchasing speed for 50% of all orders

80K

Monthly active users

42%

retention rate after 5 weeks

41%

of all users purchase tickets through the new map visualisation.

Get to know DOT

Din Offentlige Transport – DOT – is a collaboration between the three major public transportation organisations (bus, train and metro) in the Copenhagen area, Zealand, Lolland, Falster and Møn.

Their sole purpose is to create a better and more connected public transport, collecting customer service, traffic information, prices, tickets, communication and marketing in one organisation. In 2018 over 310 million passengers chose to travel by either bus, train or metro in those areas.

Our goal was to remove friction and pain points for all passengers. Using the app shouldn’t be a memorable experience.
It should be as easy, fast and painless as possible in order to get you from A to B regardless of ticket options

Catering to millions of travellers

Forecasts suggest that more than 617.000 daily journeys will be taken via the Metro from 2035. In other words, the system behind the new DOT app needed to be technologically advanced to provide a smooth customer experience for millions of travellers, who in turn also demanded a large variety of ticket options.

Compatible with future metro lines

The new DOT app accommodates commuters as well as the occasional passenger with 11 different ticket options for the area they operate in. The DOT app is developed with the intention of adding on the two upcoming Metro-lines, Nordhavnslinjen and Sydhavnslinjen, which are opening up in 2020 and 2024, respectively.
